Marald Van Haasteren: Inescapable Conflict

We are exceptionally proud to present a beautiful new print we worked on with Dutch artist Marald Van Haasteren. This print is Marald’s tribute to his father, who passed away earlier this year, and would have celebrated his 87th birthday today, September 26th. Here is the description in his own words:

“Today marks the day of what would have been my father’s 87 birthday. It’s fitting to release the second half of my memoriam prints on this date. Another tribute to my father, (Ma)rinus Nicolaas Jan van Haasteren, who passed away earlier this year.

Inescapable Conflict is part of the series of work I made for Baroness’ Gold & Grey album.

My father was very important to me, always a good soundboard & source for knowledge, inspiration. Whenever I would take an interest in a certain subject, he would show me books from his massive library, or he would buy books so I could delve more into my interests. He never stopped encouraging me, to make a career out of my art. He didn’t always agree with my choices, why wouldn’t I work for certain people/ companies  but in the end he expressed his admiration for me sticking to my principles & taking the long road. He was more than curious about the people I worked with: who is this John Baizley & why do you work with an American screen printer? He insisted on seeing Baroness live & it was very special to watch my friends play their hearts out along his side. He was at every final day of the Full Bleed exhibition at Roadburn, always full of excitement for the next edition. I’m glad he got to meet them all & seeing him do what he did best: socializing, being charming & way too Dutch (honest, direct).

It’s a beautiful & more than fitting gesture to release this piece through BRLSQ. It’s extra special that Ben printed these: He & my father had a special bond, a genuine interest in each other & would brighten up theirs days when they met. Ben: my father would have loved this.

Rust zacht lieve pa, ik mis je.”
